A Decision Maker Makes Decisions

When needing to make a decision and no decision is made…a decision has been made – to put it off! Delaying a decision often increases the risk of someone or something else making the decision. When you are the decision maker of a company or executive team and not making the decision…you are not doing your job.

Once deciding not to make a decision, then it can become too late to decide. Usually when this happens it’s not what the decision
maker really wanted resulting in a loss… sometimes a very big loss.

We all make millions of decisions at home and work every day. Just one of these decisions could be the difference between happiness and unhappiness, success and failure, life and death…

People often think that their choices, and thus decisions in life, don’t really matter. Reality is that each of us are the direct result today of all the decisions made to date. Resolve to be a decision maker today.

Here are 10 tips to help us all become an effective decision maker:

1) Be prepared to think spontaneously and look ahead to what decisions may arise in the future. Looking ahead with a relaxed and clear state of mind can help a decision maker when “in the moment.”

2) A decision makers should work out the pros and cons of each outcome, get advice if and when necessary, before making a decision.

3) A decision maker asks, “lf if I don’t make a decision now what result could happen?”

4) Make a decision and act upon that decision? Without action, what good is the decision in itself?

5) A decision maker gets advice from only trusted sources who share the same values and beliefs. Don’t fall victim to asking everyone the decisions they make for themselves.

6) Don’t make rash decisions, especially if this has happened in the past and these decisions always failed.

7) A seasoned decision maker will ask what the real reason is for REALLY putting off making a decision.

8) If a wrong decision has been made, first acknowledge that. Quickly do whatever necessary to correct a wrong decision.

9) A decision maker listens to instinct and gives this voice a high score.

10) A decision maker remembers that sometimes the decision itself isn’t as important as actually just making one.

Who said being a decision maker was easy?
