(Excerpted from Mike’s upcoming How to Market Your Ebook, available January 3, 2012)
Authors seem to fall into two groups: those who love to write and spread the words for literary sake and those who also love to make a living as an author. I have been closely following the book publishing industry for more than 10 years and have observed several large publishing houses in New York City set the direction of book publishing. Today individual authors have so many choices in how they publish that the power of publishing has shifted to individual authors.
The eBook revolution is clearly in the favor of an author making direct connections with readers. Many authors relish the idea of writing a quality eBook and feel a challenge as high as Mt. Everest when it comes to marketing online and selling their eBook creation.
I have conducted lengthy research and had many conversations with eBook experts. Definitive trends have emerged from my interaction with eBook veterans coupled with my own experiences and 2011 has shaped up as a watershed year for eBook acceptance.
All genres fit well with eBook delivery to readers. It's why several noted authors have remarked of the new digital era that the best marketing tool for an author is "the next book", and that time spent on writing new eBooks tends to equate to greater marketing online power than any other single activity.
When your brand new eBook is out – then what? In the new digital world, how do we market? How do we get "discovered" and produce an income from our digital assets?
I've noticed the eBooks that sell best seem to be professional looking (covers, formatting, editing), have low prices, good product descriptions, and are well-written.
